The Vitality Connection Nature Sanctuary

As a member of the Green Spa Network (GSN), a nonprofit trade association serving the spa industry in support of action for a sustainable future, I support its mission to promote the vital connections among personal wellbeing, economic sustainability and the health of the planet. Through networking, education and best practices developed with a membership of the nation’s most innovative green spas, GSN is a resource for all people striving to build a vital planet.

Trees are the Answer!

Planting trees can make a significant difference in our fight against climate change and help restore our National Forests, watersheds and wildlife habitats. More than one million acres of our national forests need reforestation.

Our Vitality Connection Nature Sanctuary’s tree planting partner is The National Forest Foundation(NFF), a small, lean organization addressing huge issues. NFF engages the public in community-based and national programs that promote the health and resiliency of forests’ ecosystems to effectively withstand ever-increasing threats. They offer opportunities for ecologically sustainable recreation for all nature enthusiasts to generate and strengthen meaningful connections to the 193-million-acre National Forest System. In addition, NFF prides themselves on their stewardship of donor and funder relationships for the benefit of the National Forests.

The Importance Of Trees: How Do Trees Keep Us Alive & Healthy?

Human life could not exsist if there were no trees. We know that forests are a vital part of oxygen production, as well as the absorption of carbon dioxide. Forests help to purify the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the environment we live in. These natural spaces are also beneficial for our physical and mental health. Spending time in nature can help relieve stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and boost feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Whatever you call it – forest bathing, ecotherapy, mindfulness in nature, green time or the wilderness cure — humans evolved in the great outdoors, and your brain benefits from a journey back to nature.

Keep Outside in Mind for Less Stress

Numerous studies illustrate how much forest walks can do for heart and respiratory health, immune system function and lowering stress levels. Reducing stress and anxiety and boosting immune systems and respiratory health are all important for maintaining our well-being.  A UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Magazine article describes scientific findings that “walking in trees lowered people’s blood pressure, cortisol levels, pulse rates, and sympathetic nervous system activity (related to stress), while increasing their parasympathetic nervous system activity (related to relaxation)” —being able to breathe in the fresh air, smell the flowers, hear the birds, and listen to the wind in the trees can be a welcome escape from the busy city.

Our National Forests are truly incredible. They’re especially great for fun outdoor pursuits all year long.  We need to collectively protect, conserve, plant and restore our woodlands, wetlands and other natural areas — to help in the fight against climate disruption, and to ensure more people have access to areas that keep us mentally and physically well.       Forests provide a place of peace, comfort, and beauty.

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
